BDMLR Orkney is a network of dedicated, trained volunteers covering the coastline of Orkney, rescuing marine mammals in distress. In recent years, the Orkney team has had several major whale or dolphin stranding incidents including 40 pilot whale which needed herding out to stop them stranding, a common dolphin mass stranding and a killer whale stranding. We have also dealt with numerous seal-related incidents, and these are also increasing as the population of grey seals increases in Orkney.
We now have specialist equipment including dolphin stretchers and a set of large whale rescue pontoons based in Mainland Orkney and a second set in Sanday to cover the Outer Isles. BDMLR is a registered charity and operates almost entirely by volunteers 365 days per year & 24/7 throughout the UK.
